How the pieces fit

One foundation. Four connected parts.

Match the numbered markers to the system notes below.

Foundation cross-section showing positive grade, one exterior wall treatment with waterproofing shown, washed drainage aggregate, and a perforated drain at the footing; damp proofing is an alternative treatment, and final details follow project plans and applicable code.
  1. 01

    Positive grade

Where site conditions allow, finished grade slopes away to direct surface water from the foundation.

  2. 02

    Exterior wall treatment

Waterproofing is shown. Damp proofing is an alternative scope—not a second layer.

  3. 03

    Drainage aggregate & backfill

Washed angular stone is shown; final aggregate and backfill follow the approved project detail.

  4. 04

    Footing drain

The perforated drain is installed in washed aggregate at the footing; final elevation and approved discharge follow project plans and applicable code.

Illustrative only. Waterproofing is shown; damp proofing is an alternative wall treatment, not a second layer. Final wall treatment, drain elevation and approved discharge, aggregate, backfill, and grade follow project plans and applicable code.

  • Resist water infiltration

Exterior waterproofing uses a compatible membrane or coating to resist water infiltration at below-grade walls.

  • Limit soil-moisture penetration

Damp proofing is used where soil moisture is present and hydrostatic pressure is not expected.

  • Support foundation drainage

Washed drainage aggregate provides a path to the foundation drainage system; backfill depends on the project detail and site conditions.
